update 102

hi friends! hope all is well in your world!

things have been hectic on the work front, but nothing to complain about. first patch of great news is that i’ve been renewed for the next fiscal year! second patch or great news is that we met the first of four “who knows if its possible” deadlines. here’s hoping that the next three are as successful. i like to finish things so having deadlines is really worthwhile for me. yay! another thing worth noting is extensive work with creating books in InDesign. i haven’t had as much experience with this until now and have even learned to automate a table of contents. thanks InDesign forums for tips and tricks!

now, onto Laughing Dot! i’m estimating the launch to be the fall of 2010. this estimation is for the completed site, 50+ designs, store, and all the business protocols. i’m chugging through the “be your own boss, small time business operator” books to get all my financial ducks in a row and working on the business plan. 2010 seems far off, but i am hoping to have things ironed out so it will be a good experience for everyone involved. allotting this time will hopefully allow for better quality of service and product. for this business, one of my missions is to be as economically and environmentally responsible as possible without sacrificing the art/design…tricky! additionally, i’m learning the art of crochet, so there may be handmade mini dottie plush toys as well. fun! i’m making some of the amigurumi animals from Lion Brand (all their patterns are free now) in order to test out different patterns and then hopefully be able to create my own based on my experience with these. thanks to the Arts and Drafts people for making this journey into this yarn art so successful!

these are the plans my friends, stay tuned and thanks for reading!

update 101

sorry for the large time gap since my initial blog, all apologies and thanks for your patience.

life’s been great! i’ve been working a sweet design position for the university of texas (see educational illustration for some samples of board games and worksheets) and hope the project is renewed as long as they intend. “yay” on that front in these hard economic times because it’s a wonderful position, i enjoy the work and the rewards of being a part of helping children learn. additionally, its given me this time to concentrate on my card business.

ladies and gentlemen, i have a business name – laughing dot. doesn’t it make you giggle just a little after you say it? i know that’s what happens to me when i say it. anyway, it’s been a long and frustrating obstacle to come up with a name i like. and its is in no shortage of thanks to the persistence of my wonderful friends amy (www.amyhadley.com) and megan (www.thelifeilead.com), who put the pressure on high these past few weeks for me to overcome this hurdle. and thanks to jen (www.jnadesigns.com) for getting me hooked on craftypod and craftsanity podcasts that have great business tips sprinkled in with really inspiring and interesting crafter interviews. a million thanks to these sparkly gems in my life!

so moving forward, i’ll be working on the design of the website/online store (www.laughingdot.com) with all the adorable goodies from the portfolio on this site featuring dottie and brand new ones that i saved up for this day, paperwork, and product development. exciting!

that’s it for now. check back soon and have a great week!

lotsa projects

in honor of Independance Day, i’ve decided to start blogging. its a day about freedom in America and dreams coming true. my life has been very rich; full of curves and turns in my artistic road, but its all coming together.

things have been going really well for me. i had a patch of time recently that i took advantage of. it was a great break that let me rest, relax, and re-energize. i went to new york, saw some fun art, saw some family, and brainstormed/designed some new ideas. very cool.

current projects:
i started another contract at Thinkwell earlier this week. it’s been great to see everyone again and work with such a great bunch of people. sad, only a month and a half, but if you’ve ever worked there, you’d go back too!

i completed the logo for the softball team the Mad Batters. it was a fun experience and a nice challenge to work in a style i haven’t ever done. it looks great and they’re happy with it so, three cheers to that!

i also have some great upcoming projects in the works:
the first is something that i’ve received a lot of feedback for and has that been brewing in my mind since my days of typesetting invitations. that’s right, i’m starting my postcard and notecard line! it’ll star dottie (of the thinking-works line). she’s my alter ego, the one that does anything worldly possible. so adorable. i’m very proud of it and hopefully it’ll sell like gangbusters (or whatever the saying is…hotcakes?). look for that after i do all the paperwork to get this show on the road. i’m very fortunate to have such supportive and helpful people in my life that got me going on this project. namely, big thanks to Cindy at the Party Cat that connected me to Kelly Breeden at Mud Pie Papers. thanks for all your tips and help from the bottom of my heart!

in collaboration with plastic cupcake, l.l.c., the second project is a childrens’ series in which i’ll be co-creating and illustrating. the idea is still in development, but it’s a fun project that i’m confident about.

the third project is more of a personal nature. i got my sewing machine a little while ago which was very exciting. i’ve been playing around on it, reading up and practicing. i haven’t actually made anything that i’m comfortable wearing or showing yet, but i’ve made a few things here and there. totally fun. who knows, one day there may be a clothing line!

well, that’s it for now folks. i’m thinking BIG and having a good time doing what i can to accomplish it!
